Cookie Policy

1. What cookies are
A cookie is a small piece of text that a website stores in your browser. When you visit the site again, the browser sends the cookie back so the site can recognise you. Cookies are how websites remember that you are logged in, what language you prefer, or what you put in a shopping cart.
2. Cookies used by the Edu Suite
The system sets exactly three cookies:
| Name | Purpose | Duration | Type |
|---|---|---|---|
session |
Keeps you logged in. Contains an encrypted session identifier that links your browser to your account on the server. | Until you sign out, or after a period of inactivity (typically 30 minutes to 24 hours depending on school settings). | Strictly necessary |
_csrf |
Protects forms from cross-site request forgery attacks. Without this, anyone could trick your browser into submitting actions on your behalf. | Same as session. | Strictly necessary |
theme |
Remembers whether you chose light or dark mode so the page does not flash the wrong colour on every load. | 1 year. | Preference |
3. What is NOT used
- No analytics cookies. The system does not use Google Analytics, Plausible, Fathom, Matomo, or any analytics service.
- No advertising cookies. There is no advertising on the platform and no ad network integration.
- No social media cookies. There are no Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, or other social media pixels or widgets.
- No third-party cookies. No external service sets cookies through this system.
- No fingerprinting. The system does not attempt to identify you through browser characteristics, canvas rendering, or other fingerprinting techniques.
4. Why there is no cookie banner
Cookie consent banners exist because most websites set tracking and advertising cookies that require user consent under laws like the GDPR and ePrivacy Directive. The Edu Suite only sets cookies that are strictly necessary for the service to function (keeping you logged in and protecting against attacks) plus one preference cookie (light/dark mode).
Under the GDPR, strictly necessary cookies are exempt from the consent
requirement. The theme preference cookie stores a single word
(light or dark) and has no privacy
implication. For these reasons, the system does not display a cookie
consent banner.
5. How to manage cookies
You can delete or block cookies through your browser settings. However:
- Deleting the
sessioncookie will sign you out. - Blocking the
_csrfcookie will prevent all forms from working (the system will reject every submission as a potential attack). - Deleting the
themecookie will reset the colour mode to the default.
If you block all cookies, the Edu Suite will not function. This is by design. The cookies it uses are not optional extras but core security and authentication mechanisms.
How to clear cookies in common browsers
- Chrome: Settings → Privacy and security → Clear browsing data → Cookies
- Firefox: Settings → Privacy & Security → Cookies and Site Data → Clear Data
- Safari: Preferences → Privacy → Manage Website Data
- Edge: Settings → Cookies and site permissions → Manage and delete cookies
6. Local storage
In addition to cookies, the system may store a small amount of data in your browser's local storage. This is used for:
- Remembering which navigation sections you expanded or collapsed
- Caching the sidebar open/closed state between page loads
Local storage data never leaves your browser and is never sent to the server. It contains no personal information.
7. Server logs
When you use the Edu Suite, the server records your IP address, the page you visited, and the time of the request. This is standard web server behaviour and is used for security monitoring (detecting unauthorised access attempts) and debugging. These logs are not cookies and are not stored in your browser.
